Keep the boundary visible

A model leaves things out so that you can reason. Trouble begins when an omitted condition changes while you continue trusting the result. Before acting, ask what must remain true for the model to help, and what observation would show that you have moved beyond its useful range.

In The Black Swan, author Nassim Nicholas Taleb warns against trusting simplified models beyond what they can explain.

A model needs a boundary as much as a prediction.

Where it breaks down

Simplification is unavoidable. This is a reason to test assumptions and retain contrary evidence, not to abandon models whenever they are imperfect.

How it connects

The relevant question is whether the current conditions remain inside the model's reach.

This idea appeared in Where the model runs out, the Involves connection for October 28, 2026, which asked: What happens when a clean explanation meets an untidy world?
