Where the model runs out
What happens when a clean explanation meets an untidy world?
01 · Word
Platonic Fold
Pronounced pluh-TAH-nik FOHLD
noun
The boundary where a tidy model meets a reality more complicated than the model allows.
Examples
The forecast reached its Platonic fold when an assumed constant changed.
A flawless diagram can hide the Platonic fold between a designed process and actual use.
Origin
Nassim Nicholas Taleb uses the term in The Black Swan, published in 2007. It is his metaphor for the collision of idealized categories with messy reality, not a phrase coined by Plato.
02 · Idea
Keep the boundary visible
A model leaves things out so that you can reason. Trouble begins when an omitted condition changes while you continue trusting the result. Before acting, ask what must remain true for the model to help, and what observation would show that you have moved beyond its useful range.
In The Black Swan, author Nassim Nicholas Taleb warns against trusting simplified models beyond what they can explain.
A model needs a boundary as much as a prediction.
Limits
Simplification is unavoidable. This is a reason to test assumptions and retain contrary evidence, not to abandon models whenever they are imperfect.

The cold the decision could not dismiss
Kennedy Space Center, Florida; January 28, 1986
Challenger broke apart after failure of a seal in a solid rocket booster joint. The Rogers Commission found that low temperature impaired the O-ring's ability to respond as the joint moved. Concerns about the seals and cold-weather performance had been raised before launch.
- Vehicle
- Space Shuttle Challenger
- Component
- Solid rocket booster joint
- Condition
- Unusually cold launch weather
The caveat
Engineers had warned about the risk. Challenger illustrates a failure to act on known concerns, so it should not be described as a wholly unforeseeable disaster.
The investigation also examined how technical concerns reached decision-makers. The launch went ahead despite concerns about whether the seals would work in the cold.
The connection
A model becomes dangerous when its limits disappear from the decision.
