Orbital Resonance
A gravitational relationship in which repeating orbital timing allows bodies to exert a regular, cumulative influence on one another
Examples
Io, Europa, and Ganymede participate in an orbital resonance around Jupiter.
A near match between two orbital periods is a clue to resonance, but timing alone does not establish the full dynamical relationship.
Origin
Resonance describes the importance of repeated timing. In a mean-motion orbital resonance, orbital periods lie near a ratio of small whole numbers and the bodies' gravitational interactions maintain a related pattern. A simple numerical resemblance is not the entire definition.
How it connects
Orbital resonance names the repeating relationship among the moons.
This word appeared in The power of a repeated pull, the Involves connection for October 3, 2026, which asked: How can small gravitational influences keep reshaping a world?

Which observation is most suggestive of an orbital resonance?
Repeated gravitational configurations associated with near whole-number period ratios. Exactly. Resonance concerns sustained orbital timing and interaction, not visual similarity or one encounter.
What the sources establish
The Galilean moons exhibit coupled orbital resonance with approximately four, two, and one orbits for Io, Europa, and Ganymede.
