A stable outcome can be dangerous
A Nash equilibrium is not the best outcome. It is an outcome that no one can improve alone. In a nuclear arms race, both countries may prefer mutual disarmament, yet neither will disarm first because doing so would leave it exposed. Each side's safest individual choice can preserve a danger both want to escape.
Rational choices can therefore produce a collectively worse result. The equilibrium is held in place by incentives, not approval. To escape it, players must change what happens when they act or create a credible way to move together.
No one needs to like an equilibrium for everyone to keep choosing it.
When a bad outcome persists, ask what each player risks by being the first to change.
Where it breaks down
Nash equilibrium is a model, not a guarantee of human behavior. Games can have several equilibria, players may lack information, and threats may not be credible. Nuclear deterrence is dynamic, uncertain, and vulnerable to mistakes, so the simple model reveals one incentive without capturing the whole system.
Its practical value is diagnostic. Escaping a bad equilibrium often requires a treaty, contract, or rule that changes the risk of acting first and makes joint movement credible.
