Why did we name robots after forced labor?
A warning about servitude became a promise of progress.

Origin
Robot comes from the Czech robota, the compulsory labor serfs owed a lord. Karel Čapek introduced the term in his 1920 play R.U.R., short for Rossum's Universal Robots. He later credited his brother Josef with suggesting the word. It soon traveled from Czech theater into languages around the world.
02 · Idea
The first robots were a warning
R.U.R. begins with a dream of cheap, tireless labor. Humans manufacture biological workers, deny them freedom, and send them across the world. The robots eventually revolt and destroy almost all humanity. The machine uprising was not added later to the word robot. It was built into the story that created it.
R.U.R. means Rossum's Universal Robots. First performed in 1921, its robots are synthetic people rather than metal machines. That difference matters less than their role: they are treated as disposable labor, and their rebellion turns a fantasy of perfect servants into a warning about domination.

Limits and context
Čapek was not predicting modern AI. His target was the industrial logic that reduces workers to units of production. The robots mirror exploited people, and their revolt exposes what dehumanization does to the rulers as well as the ruled.
The century that followed kept both halves of Čapek's idea: the hope for tireless help and the fear that the helper may escape our control.
03 · Moment
Elektro promises a brighter future
The 1939 New York World's Fair, Westinghouse pavilion; a mechanical servant becomes a symbol of progress
At the 1939 New York World's Fair, Westinghouse presented Elektro as a friendly preview of tomorrow. The seven-foot humanoid walked, moved its arms, counted on its fingers, and answered spoken commands. Its comic stage act and golden body turned the robot from Čapek's exploited worker into an upbeat symbol of convenience, leisure, and technological progress.

The caveat
Elektro did not understand speech or act independently. Spoken commands triggered electrical relays, while recordings supplied its voice. It was a carefully staged demonstration, not a general-purpose machine.
That limitation was part of the spectacle's meaning. Elektro could perform the shape of the future, but not its substance. Programmable robots reached factories in the 1960s, while capable humanoid machines remained elusive. Advances in perception, language, and movement now bring Elektro's promise closer: robots that can work with people instead of merely posing for them.
Westinghouse called Elektro the “Moto-Man,” a servant of the future designed to look useful, amusing, and safe.
The connection
The robot began as a warning about forced labor and returned at the World's Fair as a promise of liberation from labor. Our challenge is to realize Elektro's optimism without forgetting Čapek's lesson: intelligence should expand human dignity, not reproduce servitude.
