Leave room for the objection
What makes a gathering of experts worth more than their papers?
01 · Word
Colloquium
Pronounced kuh-LOH-kwee-um
noun
A scholarly meeting where a presentation opens into questions and discussion.
Examples
The historian brought an unfinished argument to the colloquium.
Their monthly colloquium reserves as much time for questions as for the talk.
Origin
From Latin colloquium, a conversation. Its academic use preserves the exchange: an audience gets to question the speaker.
02 · Idea
The question changes the work
A listener may notice an assumption the speaker has overlooked. Asking how the conclusion would change under a different assumption can expose a weakness in the argument. A useful scholarly gathering gives people time to state such objections precisely and lets the speaker answer them.
The Solvay physics meetings provide a historical example of sustained scientific discussion. Their 1927 meeting brought the interpretation of quantum mechanics into direct dispute.
Make room for the question your slides leave out.
Limits
Discussion can reward confidence and status instead of accuracy. An objection still needs evidence.
03 · Moment
Quantum theory faces its questioners
Brussels, Belgium; October 1927
At the fifth Solvay Conference, physicists debated how to interpret quantum theory, whose calculations were already successful. Albert Einstein challenged the emerging interpretation defended by Niels Bohr and others. Their exchanges made the assumptions behind the mathematics part of the discussion.

The caveat
Solvay was formally a conference, used here to illustrate the conversational purpose of a colloquium. Later recollections should not be treated as a verbatim transcript, and the meeting did not end disputes over quantum interpretation.
The official proceedings preserve reports and debate. The physicists could agree that the calculations worked while disagreeing about what they meant.
The connection
A discussion can expose assumptions that a polished presentation leaves intact.
