Learning without waiting for admission
What makes self-directed study more than collecting information?
01 · Word
Autodidacticism
Pronounced aw-toh-dy-DAK-tih-siz-um
noun
The practice of directing your own education, rather than relying chiefly on formal instruction.
Examples
Her autodidacticism began with borrowed books and became a disciplined study of astronomy.
He paired autodidacticism with code reviews so that his mistakes would not become habits.
Origin
Built from autodidact, a self-taught person, using Greek roots for self and taught. The word identifies who directs the learning, not a life without teachers.
02 · Idea
Give curiosity a test
A reading list can grow indefinitely without changing what you can do. Test what you learn with a calculation you can check, an experiment someone can repeat, or an explanation another person can question.
Michael Faraday's early education joined private reading to public lectures, careful notes, and eventually work inside the Royal Institution. His learning was self-directed, with help from others.
Choose your lessons. Invite correction.
Limits
Feedback can be wrong, and access to equipment or mentors is unequal. Self-direction does not remove those constraints or make formal education unnecessary.
03 · Moment
The bookbinder's lecture notes
London, England; 1812–1813
While working as a bookbinder, Michael Faraday attended lectures by the chemist Humphry Davy in 1812. He made detailed notes and presented a bound account of the lectures to Davy. In 1813 he entered the Royal Institution as a laboratory assistant.

The caveat
Faraday directed much of his early learning, but books, public lectures, and Davy’s support helped him enter science.
Books and lectures had supplied material for study. The laboratory gave Faraday practical work and contact with experienced scientists.
The connection
Self-directed learning becomes stronger when private study meets external correction.
